Le Juif Errant ("the Wandering Jew") is a French opera by Jacques Fromental Halévy (1799 - 1862)[1], with a French libretto by Eugène Scribe (1791-1861)[2] and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges (1799-1875)[3].
Not to be confused with Halévy and Scribe's other opera, La Juive ("the Jewess").

The original text
Based on Eugène Sue's novel , Le Juif errant (1844-45), the opera opened at the Paris Opera (Salle Le Peletier) on 23 April 1852, and had 48 further performances over two seasons.
Translations and adaptations
Translated/adapted into Dutch as De Zwervende Jood ("The Wandering Jew") by Joseph Suasso de Lima. Though performed, the translation was never published.
Performance history in South Africa
1837: Performed in Dutch as De Zwervende Jood in Cape Town in 1837.
