La Banqueroute du Savetier, à propos de Botte ("The bankruptcy of the cobbler, concerning a boot") is a one-act French comedy/vaudeville by Alphonse Martainville (Alphonse Louis Dieudonné Martainville)[1].

Original text

Based on a "canevas"[2] (i.e. a general framework or scenario for a performance) by Camillo Fédérici (1749-1802)[3], the play was first performed in Thèátre du Montansier, Paris on 5 Thermidor, An 9 (23 July, 1801) and printed Paris : Barba, An XI, (1803).

Translation

Freely translated from the French version into Dutch as Het Bankroet van den Schoenlapper ("The Bankruptcy of the Cobbler") by Jan de Quack and published in Amsterdam by Wed. J. de Groot en zoonen, 1804; in Rotterdam by J. Hendriksen, 1804.

Performance history in South Africa

1854: Performed in Dutch by Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst in Cape Town in the Bree Street Theatre (cnr of Dorp Street), on 18 May, as an afterpiece to Roland de Monglave, of De Zegepraal der Onschuld (Loaisel Tréogate, tr M.G Engelman)

1867: Produced in Dutch by Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst at the Theatre Royal, Cape Town on 23 May, as afterpiece to Eleonore van Rosalba, of De Puinhopen van Paluzzi (Pujos and Dabaytua), followed by songs sung by J. de Quack and a ballet performance.

1867: Produced in Dutch by Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst at the Theatre Royal, Cape Town on 16 July, with Het Geheim (Fournier and Arnould, tr De Bruine).

1868: Produced in Dutch by Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst at the Odd Fellows Hall, Cape Town on 13 November, with Othello, of De Moor (Shakespeare).
