L'Etourderie ("The thoughtless deed") is a French one-act play by Monsieur Fagan (Christophe-Barthélemy Fagan)


The original text

First performed in Paris by Les Comédiens François ordinaires du Roi on 18 July, 1737. Published inter alia in Vienna by Jean Pierre van Ghelen in 1754 (the author given as "Fagand") and in Paris by Duchenne in 1760 and 1761.

Translations and adaptations

Known in South Africa through an English adaptation entitled The Old Maid, a comedy in two acts by Arthur Murphy (1727 – 1805)[1].

The English version first performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1761, and printed in London by P. Vaillant in the same year.
