L'Enfant de la Maison is a French vaudeville in one act by Charles Victor Varin (1798-1869)[1], Eugène Labiche (1815–1888)[2] and Eugène Nyon (1812-1870)[3].

The original text

First performed in Paris at the Théâtre du Gymnase on 21 November 1845

Published by Beck and Tresse in 1845

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Dutch as Het Kind van den Huize ("The child of the house") by Willem Färber (probably Eloi Willem Färber, born 1832). The name is wrongly spelled "W. Farber" in some sources.

The translation appears to have been prepared specifically for the Rederijkers and was published in Amsterdam by G. Theod. Bom in 1868, with a second edition in 1874.

Performance history in South Africa

1873: Performed in Dutch as Het Kind van den Huize by Aurora II in the Oddfellows Hall, Cape Town, on 3 July, as an afterpiece to Een Offer der Vrijheid, 1762 (Schuitemaker).
