Krach um Jolanthe (“Fuss over Jolante”) by August Hinrichs (1879-1956)[1].


The original text

Written in 1930 and published in Plattdeutsch (Low German) as Swienskomödi Een Buernstück in dree Ennens in Hamburg by Quickborn (1930, 1933). Also known in its High German version of Krach um Jolanthe("Fuss about Jolanthe"), and published in this form in 1933 by Drei-Masken-Verlag, Berlin, and by Deutscher Laienspiel-Verlag, Weinheim in 1952.. Filmed in 1934 by Carl Fröhlich.

Performance history in South Africa

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Afrikaans as Bohaai oor Jolanthé and directed by Mavis de Villiers for K.A.T. in August 1942.

Another translation into Afrikaans, Bohaai oor 'n Otjie, was directed by Anna Neethling-Pohl for the NTO, 1956. The cast included Mathilde Hanekom, Reenen van Niekerk, Danie Smuts, Elma Krynauw, Gilyan Francesco, Jaco van der Westhuizen, André de Jongh, Dawid Botha, Leon Brink, Siegfried Mynhardt.
