The original text

First performed at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in 1809. A scene ridiculing Methodists was suppressed by order of the Lord Chamberlain, but later published.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1823: Apparently a copy of the music for this play was sought by the Garrison Players in Cape Town, though no performance is recorded in this year.

1829: Performed by the English Theatrical Amateur Company in The African Theatre, Cape Town on 3 October, with The Curfew (listed as by "Tobois", actually by Tobin)
