BA (Honours) MA (Dramatic Art, University of Witwatersrand, 1980) with a masters thesis on The Semiotics of Film and a PhD (University of Witwatersrand, 1984) with a doctoral thesis on Ideology and Cultural Production in South African Cinema[1]
CCMS Director 1985-2013
He is the founding editor (with John van Zyl) of the journal Critical Arts (1980-; now known as Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies and co-editor of the Journal of African Cinemas. He is a member of the Academy of Science for South Africa, contributes to programmes at the AFDA Film School, has written extensively on the South African film Industry, and acted as a script consultant.
