Biography

Born in Salisbury, grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), moved to London after World War Two. Wrote The Golden Grain (1951), the thriller The Painted Devil (1952), Spell My Name Right. He returned to Rhodesia in 1954 as head of the Federal Broadcasting Corporation, moved to South Africa in 1974 to join the SABC as announcer on the English Service. He was married to Clare Marshall since 1960.

Career

Apeared in about 250 plays in London, became interested in the construction of plays and began writing plays.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Played the lead in The Mousetrap for Brian Brooke in 1954. Played “Percy” in Rattle of a Simple Man and “Lutz” in Student Prince, also performed in Alfie, Guys and Dolls, Swansong, and London Assurance. He wrote Till Debts Do Us Part.


Awards, etc

1962 Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Frank Elgin in Clifford Odet's Winter Journey. 1969 Best Actor Award for Baldeck in With Courage This Day. 1970 Best Actor Award for John Pank's Silhouettes of Autumn. In South Africa it was retitled Windmills of the Mind and won Amstel Play of the Year Award.
