Visited South Africa periodically between 1896 and 1908, as a guest of Cecil John Rhodes. He was an associate Editor of ''The Friend'' in Bloemfontein after the British occupation in 1900. He advised [[Stephen Black]] to concentrate on local colour and Cape characters in his plays.
