Biography

Born in Johannesburg. He passed away due to the complications of heart surgery on 29 April 2011.

Training

Studied Drama (BA and the Performer's Diploma) at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1976.

Career

In the early years following his studies very involved with Theatre in Education and the SA Association for Theatre and Youth Theatre. Worked for a year for Robin Malan's PACT Playwork Company, a year and a half for CAPAB and then returned to Johannesburg in 1976. Fully bilingual, Jonathan is a well-known voice on radio, and has also broken into voice-overs and spots.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

While a student, he appeared in Offending the Audience (Handke) directed by Robert Mohr, with a cast that also included Paul Baskind, Lesley Nott, Diane Cox, Paul Herzberg, Angelique Rockas, Judith Krummeck and Marcel van Heerden. He has performed in The Indian Wants the Bronx (at the Market Theatre in 1980 as Joey), Christian (for Brickhill/Burke in 1980), Don Juan (at the Market Theatre in 1980), Oh What a Lovely War! (with PACT in 1980), Faces in the Wall (at the Market Theatre, 1980), Spider's Web (for Pieter Toerien), Tom Foolery (for Pieter Toerien, 1981), Fifth of July (1982), Who Goes Bare? (1982), In Praise of Rattigan (1984), Dog Days and The War at Home, Simon Gray’s The Common Pursuit (Alhambra Theatre, 1987), Bobby Heaney’s production of Largo Desolato , 1988, Macbeth under Dieter Reible’s direction in 1990.
