He was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He moved to South Africa in 1960.

Career
John took part in several amateur and semi-professional English productions before joining PACT in 1964. Until June 1964 he was a member of the schools programme (English and Afrikaans). He has also had some film roles.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
His first professional role in Afrikaans was as Valentino in Twaalfde Nag (TRUK, August-September 1964).
