Joe Stewardson
(19**-19*) Actor. He came to South Africa in 1947. "He combines a talent for cabaret and variety work" (The Alexander Theatre programme of The Amorous Prawn). He played in N.T.O productions such as The Prisoner and The Judge. "Joe's rich voice is a great asset on the stage" (Alexander Theatre programme of The Amorous Prawn). He starred in The Amorous Prawn in September 1961. ** He starred in Saul Levitt’s The Andersonville Trial, which was staged by the Reps in 1962. Albert Ninio directed this play also starring Gordon Mulholland. He starred in the PACT production Hamlet which was staged at the Civic in 1964. It was directed by Margaret Inglis and also starred Reinet Maasdorp, Joan Blake and François Swart in 1964. Together with Marika Mann, he starred in James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter which was staged at the Alexander in 1967. It was directed for PACT by Taubie Kushlick. He starred in, and won best actor award for King Lear, directed by Robert Mohr for PACT at the Alexander in 1969. He starred in Rex Garner’s production of The Lionel Touch for The Academy Theatre of Laughter at the Alexander in 1971.It also starred Vivienne Drummond, Kenneth Baker and Diane Appleby. He later married Appleby. He starred in the PACT production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, directed by Ken Leach together with Diane Wilson, Bill Flynn and Richard Haines in 1975. Together with John Higgins he produced John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men starring himself, Ken Gampu, Don Leonard and Diane Appleby at the Lake Theatre in 1975. Together with Heather Lloyd-Jones he starred in Night of January 16th at His Majesty’s in 1977. He starred in Joan Brickhill’s production of Annie which ran at His Majesty’s from November 1978 to March 1979. It also starred three young girls – Ashleigh Sendin, Diane Dupont and Memory Fick – rotating the title role, Claire Johnston, Judy Page and Joan Brickhill. He starred in a revival of Long Day's Journey into Night with Shelagh Holliday, Danny Keogh, Lesley Nott and Ron Smerczak at The Market in 1978. He starred in PACT’s production of Peter Shaffer’s Shrivings together with John Hussey with direction by Roy Sargeant in 1982. He starred in Louis Burke’s productoin of The King and I together with Judy Page for PACT at the Civic in December 1984. It was performed again at the Pretoria State Theatre in December 1986.
