Joe Masiell (1939-1985). American sSinger, cabaret performer and actor.

Biography

Born Joe Masiello in the Bronx, New York and lived in Greenwich Village for much of his life. He changed his name to Joe Masiell and gained prominence when he replaced the lead in the cast of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in 1969 and would perform in that show somewhere every year till his untimely death in 1985.

Other roles included Cindy Different Times Leaves of Grass Dear World and in the Shakespeare Festival's Central Park production of the Non Pasquale.

He was the featured artist in a musical, produced by Lily Turner, based on his nightclub act, Joe Masiell Not at the Palace.

A graduate of the High School of Performing Arts in New York.

His contribution to South African theatre

Brought to South Africa by Taubie Kushlick to star in an adaptation of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris directed by Kushlick and staged circa 1975.

In March 1982 he was once more brought out by Taubie Kushlick to star in Joe Masiell Not at the Palace at the Market Theatre.
