The original text
First performed in Paris, at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, on 11 October, 1871. First published by Alphonse Lemerre, Paris, in 1871.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Dutch by an unknown author. Nothing much is known of the Dutch version, except that a performance of a one act play by this name (ascribed to "Theurieb") was done in Pretoria in 1908 and a dramatic sketch called Jean Marie (no author mentioned), was done as preamble to a work called "Genraalsvrouwtje" (probably the four act farce Het Generaalsvrouwtje by Henri t'Sas), is recorded by the Rederijkerskamer 'Nut en Genoegen' te Holwierde on 14 January, 1921.
Translated into English as Jean Marie by Barrett H. Clark and published by S. French, 1915.
Performance history in South Africa
1908: Performed in Dutch as Jean Marie by Onze Taal in the Empress Theatre, Pretoria, on 18 June (the author's name wrongly given as "Theurieb" by Bosman, 1980:485). Also performed were De Boezemvriend(Praga) and Voor het Diner (Simons-Mees).
