Jakes Gerwel (1946-2012) was a renowned academic, struggle veteran and cultural leader.

Born in Somerset East in 1956, he studied Afrikaans literature at the University of the Leyden? ** and became an important figure in the cultural struggle of the 1970-1990 period, promoting the role of Afrikaans in the struggle for freedom. Has held numerous positions, including rector of the University of the Western Cape and chancellor of Rhodes University. For a while also Director General of the President's Office under Nelson Mandela (1994-*?).

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 2003 he became one of the forces behind and chairman of the board of the Burger-Suidoosterfees.
