Jakes Gerwel (1946-2012) was a renowned academic, struggle veteran and cultural leader.

Born in Somerset East in 1956, he studied Afrikaans literature at the University of the Leyden? ** and became an important figure in the cultural struggle of the 1970-1990 period, promoting the role of Afrikaans in the struggle for freedom. Has held numerous positions, including rector of the University of the Western Cape and chancellor of Rhodes University.
