He started out as a member of the [[Barend Fourie Geselskap]], an Afrikaans touring company which began its tour in Caledon on 6 April 1934, playing ''[[Sy Pa se Skuld]]'' ("His Father's Fault/Debt") by [[D.P. du Toit]]. Other members of the company were [[Ria Olivier]] and [[Joan de Villiers]], playing under the names Jac or "Lokkie".  He went on to become a regular member of the [[Hendrik Hanekom Geselskap]], which he joined in 1935, to take over the role of "Danie" in ''[[Oom Paul]]''. He remained with them till the mid 1940s, starring in ''[[Generaal de Wet]]'', among other plays.
