J. Stonely (fl. 1860s) was a British officer stationed at Cape Town, and amateur playwright and performer.


Biography

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He was a member of the 9th Regiment dramatic society, where he was both an amateur performer and a playwright.

His plays include a pantomime called The Courtier and the Shoemaker (1867),

On 4 April 1867, a "Dramatic and Gymnastic Display" was given as a benefit for him by the 9th Regiment, in association with Mrs Cooper. Performed were The Warlock of the Glen (Walker) as well as his own pantomime.
