He was a member of the company of players recruited in England and brought to South Africa by Henry Harper in 1884. In Harper's opening production in the newly built Theatre Royal in Cape Town, he played "Charles Verner" in Faces in the Fire and "John Bull" in The Two Gregories (Dibdin). He presumably played other roles in the rest of the season.
