Hugo Claus (1929–2008)[1] was a leading Belgian author, painter and film maker,

He published under his own name as well as various pseudonyms.

Born Hugo Maurice Julien Claus on 5 April 1929 at Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges, Belgium, he published his first novel ast the age of 21. Claus's literary contributions spanned the genres of drama, the novel, and poetry; he also left a legacy as a painter and film director.

He wrote primarily in Dutch, although he also wrote some poetry in English.

His plays were very popular in South Africa, and he visited the country in 199*, as visitor to the Drama Department and a contributor to the Vlaamse Week in Stellenbosch

The plays done in South Africa include:

Een Bruid in de Morgen, Pas de Deux, Oedipus, Theseus, Thyestes, De Dans van de Reiger and Vrijdag.
