Hugh Goldie

GOLDIE, Hugh. British born actor and director. ** He joined the Johannesburg Reps as resident director in 1959. Productions include Dylan Thomas’s Under Milkwood (1959), Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra (opening play at the Alexander Theatre, 1960), A Day in the Life Of… (1967), * Returned to England to pursue a successful career as director and actor. Later became Director of Operations at the Theatre Royal, Windsor in England, where a theatre was named after him.

The opening play at the Alexander Theatre was Goldie’s production of Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra starring Beryl Gordon in 1960. He staged A Day in the Life Of… starring English actor Harry Towb and his wife Diana Hoddinott for Johannesburg Reps at the Alexander Theatre in 1967
