"Hugenot Memorial School"

The school presented "entertainments" in the late 19th century which also contained some local plays. One of these was on 10 December 1898, when Een Misverstand, a translation and free adaptation by G.P du Toit of the popular English farce Turn Him Out by T.J. Williams, was performed by the author and friends. Ludwig Binge (1969) maintains this is the first programme he could find of an performance in Afrikaans, though the programme listed it as a "Dutch Play". Both A.G. Visser (writing as AV) and J.D du Toit (better known as the poet Totius, writing as Jaduto) wrote plays for the school entertainments while at school there.
