KRETZMER, Herbert. (19**-) Actor. ** A member of the Johannesburg REPS. Had roles in **, Romeo and Juliet (1949), **.

KRETZMER, Herbert. South African actor who later settled in London and became the drama critic for the Daily Express. He also went on to reach fame as a lyricist, writing the words for the musical Les Miserables. Starred in Romeo and Juliet, which was performed in the Pretoria Opera House and the Wits Great Hall in 1949. It was produced by the Johannesburg REPS to commemorate twenty one years of existance. It was directed by André van Gyseghem, and also starred Eugenie Heyns, Muriel Alexander and Leon Gluckman. Sets by Len Grosset and costumes by Louis Jacobson impressed. Herbert Kretzmer composed five songs for the Leon Gluckman staged revue Xmas Box at The Library towards the end of 1949. Cast included Marjorie Gordon and Johann Nell. ***(Tucker, 1997)
