Hansell Hewitt (1922-1989) was a scholar and lecturer of Classics, an actor and director.

Biography

He was born in Cape Town on 5 April 1922 and died in Grahamstown on 5 April 1989.

In 1955 he directed a multiracial version of The Three Wishes by James Ambrose Brown in Cape Town.

He translated Menaechmi by Plautus into English and directed a Rhodes University Drama Department production of the play in April 1969.

Translated and directed The Birds, 1973. (NELM [Collection: Rhodes University. Drama Department]: 2006. 48. 4. 14).

He played in Tiger at the Gates, Cape Town, 1955, The Wake, 1971..

He regularly acted in productions by the Rhodes University Drama Department, among others in The Diary of Iris Vaughan (1969) and Bagasie (André P. Brink, 1972).
