Amateur theatre veteran, playwright and trade union activist. He worked for the Garment Worker’s Union but was also active in experimental theatre in Johannesburg in the 1930s, strongly influenced by the theories and practices of Meyerholdt. *** He wrote two plays for the Bantu People’s Theatre group, namely The Word and the Act and Patriot Pie – both performed at the BPT Drama Festival in 1941. Involved with the formation of the African National Theatre? Was later to leave the country under the Suppression of Communism Act of 1950. ROUTH, Guy. Trade unionist who had been involved in the formation of the Bantu People’s Theatre, later African National Theatre circa 1940. Wrote Patriot’s Pie, performed by the Bantu People’s Theatre.
