Gone Native: The Life and Times of Regina Brooks is a musical play written by Makhaola Ndebele, with music composed by Hugh Masekela.

The original play

A play based on the life of Regina Brooks, a white woman who - defying the apartheid laws - had been arrested for staying in Orlando‚ Soweto‚ with a black man‚ policeman Richard Kumalo. In 1955 she then asked to be re-classified as a coloured woman‚ which would enable her to live with her coloured child Thandi.

Performance history in South Africa

2017: Performed at the Soweto Theatre from 8 to 20 August. Directed by Makhaola Ndebele, with musical direction by Hugh Masekela and featuring Marietjie Bothma and Ayanda Nhlangothi.
