At 14 he entered the Johannesburg School for Art, Ballet and Music under Marjorie Sturman, Ruth Inglestone and Josie Pretorius. Matriculating in 1977 with a distinction in practical ballet, he studied architecture at Wits University, graduating with a BA in the subject in 1983. Gavin is presently doing his Masters Degree in Urban Design and appearing in television productions.
He joined CAPAB's Ballet Company in 1984 and danced in their productions of Giselle, Spartacus, Coppelia and Romeo and Juliet.
