In 2011 he completed a doctorate on the topic ''Manufacturing cultural capital: Arts journalism at [[Die Burger]] (1990-1999)''. Published as ''Brothers in Armchairs. Post-apartheid cultural struggles at [[Die Burger]]'' by [[Sun Press]], 2014.

He started working as a journalist in various capacities in the 1980s, becoming a writer and General reporter for ''[[Die Burger]]'' in Cape Town in 1988, joining the arts desk in 1992, and becoming arts editor in 2001.

Gabriël Botma is die voorsitter van die Departement Joernalistiek aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US). Hy het in 2011 die graad PhD aan die US verwerf met die proefskrif “Manufacturing cultural capital: Arts journalism at Die Burger (1990-1999)”. Botma is die stigter-redakteur en uitgewer van die akademiese internetjoernaal Global Media Journal – African Edition. Hy het die graad MPhil (cum laude) in 2006 aan die US behaal met ? studie wat op mediatransformasie by Naspers en Die Burger sedert 1994 gefokus het. Hy het navorsingsartikels in vooraanstaande vaktydskrifte, soos Journalism and Mass Commucation Educator, Ecquid Novi: African Journalism Studies, Communicatio en Critical Arts, gepubliseer. Tot sy aanstelling aan die US was hy kunsredakteur en -skrywer/resensent van Die Burger in Kaapstad. Sedert die laat 1980’s het hy as joernalis in verskeie hoedanighede gewerk. Hy het op onder meer die beoordelaarspaneel van die M-Net Boekpryse (1996, 1998) en die Fleur du Cap-teaterpryse (1996–2004) gedien. Sedert 2012 is hy weer eens ? lid van laasgenoemde paneel. Hy is ook lid van die Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), die South African Communication Association (SACOMM), die South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), die International Communication Association (ICA), en die International Association of Theatre Critics (IATC).
