The Freedom Extravaganza Group

Freedom Extravaganza is an educational theatre group founded in May 2002 by the artist and director Thami Khuzwayo to fight and tackle the social issues facing South African youth especially HIV/AIDS. The group has its roots in the community of Newlands West, a large township in Durban. Freedom Extravaganza consists of 24 dedicated and motivated young people practicing theatre, dance and music to empower other young people of South Africa. Most of the shows include African traditional dance, songs and music and modern choreography, all composed by the members.

Projects

With Rhyme and Reason (2006) combined poetry and theatre and was aimed at South African youth to raise their awareness on various social issues.

Heroes of South Africa (2005-2006). This one-hour show is about the struggles South Africa is dealing with nowadays. It takes us back in the history of our country and encourages the youth to fight against HIV/Aids, crime, poverty, drugs and corruption. This play combines Zulu songs, traditional dance and challenging scenes taken from history and life.

The Song in your Head (2004-2006); a co-production with Theatre Embassy. This is not an ordinary play that deals with the didactics of the Aids disease. Rather it explores the complex human behavior that lies behind the disease and how an individual makes choices that affect his or her vulnerability to the disease.

Moving Mountains (2004); directed by Jasper Hoogenboom (NL). A location theatre piece, performed at Riverdene Secondary school, where the school itself is used as a stage. Moving Mountains involves acrobatics, modern dance and music. The theme of the play is hope, aiming at restoring the hope that is vanishing in the youth.

The Waterhole (2005); guest roles in production by Theatre Embassy (NL), NTN and Township Productions (Namibia). The Waterhole takes us back on a journey in-time; and all the way through evolution to the world of animals, which live according to the laws of nature and are fixed in place.
