Biography

Born in Scarborough, North Yorkshire to Arthur and Annie Smith, he attended Archbishop Holgate's School and the University of Hull in Kingston upon Hull.

Married Maryann Lloyd.


Career

His acting career has spanned 50 years, from numerous appearances at the National Theatre with Sir Laurence Olivier and starring in 67 countries in his award-winning one-man show Macready!, to many television roles.

He has written two plays:

Macready!, first performed in New York in 1980.

The Devil you Know, first performed in the Warehouse Theatre, Croydon, London in 2005

Contribution to South African theatre

His South African appearances include Macready! at the Grahamstown Festival, the Baxter Concert Hall, Little Abbey Theatre, Durban and Intimate Theatre, Johannesburg in 1984, and The Devil you Know in 2006 at the Theatre on the Bay (with Delena Kidd en Gary Raymond).
