Fish Out of Water, or Cookery and Clerkship is a farce in one act by Joseph Lunn (1784-1863)[].

Not to be confused with Fish out of Water a full-length farce by Derek Benfield ()[1], or A Fish out of Water a "An existential play" in one act by Thomas Gray ()[]

The original text

First performed 1824 at Theatre Royal, Haymarket, London. ‘Fish out of Water,’ a laughable farce in one act, produced 26 Aug. 1823, acted twenty-eight times (ib. ix. 210), and printed both in Helsenberg's ‘Modern English Comic Theatre,’ 5th ser., 16mo, 1843, &c., and in Lacy, vol. xvi.

Performance history in South Africa

1859: Performed as Fish out of Water in Simon's Town by the amateurs of "the Royal Naval Theatre of the H.M.S. Megaera" in the Simon's Town Theatre on 28 March, along with a scene from Macbeth (performed "in character" by Captain Nightingale), Make your Wills (Mayhew and Smith) and The Thumping Legacy (Morton)
