French circus which visited the Cape in late 1850 under the auspices of the governor Sir Harry Smith, and featured pantomime-performances and dramatised equestrian displays as part of its repertoire. The act included the pageant-style re-enactment of life on the Eastern border of the Cape in The Burnt Farm (Bosman, 1928;) [TH, JH]\
