Elma made her debut in Die Vroue van Troje, directed by Truida Pohl. She taught at the Teachers Training College in Graaff-Reinet, where she directed student performances of Ek Onthou vir Mamma and Moeder Ierland. She also appeared in Die Jaar van die Vuuros, Die Iepekonders, Bohaai oor ‘n otjie.

She was married to actor Danie Smuts.
