("Ambition and Want, or The Divorce through Love") A tragedy in 3 acts.

According to Groot (2010, p. 56), this Dutch text was most probably a translation by S. van Goor of Honneur et indigence; ou, Le divorce par amour, by Mathias Weiss and Joseph Patrat, a French version of August von Kotzebue's original Der Opfertod (performed 1796, published by Johann Baptist Wallishauffer in 1798.).

The French version first performed at the Théâtre de la Cité- Variété in 1803, and published by in Paris by Huet in the same year.

Van Goor's Dutch translation of the French text was apparently also published in 1803.

Performance history in South Africa

Performed in Cape Town by Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense on 26 September 1815, followed by De Wanhoop van Jocrisse (Dorvigny, Translated by Ogelwight, Jr.). According to Bosman, (1928, p.556) the main play (Eerzucht...etc) was credited to Patrat's French version, but they used a translation by H. Kup.
