Foreword by the Editors

The list provided here includes all the books, articles and materials consulted to write ESAT encyclopaedia, but is not limited to that body of work.

The aim is to provide as comprehensive a bibliography of South African theatre, film, media and performance as is possible. However, please note only (formally or informally) published documents and manuscripts are normally listed. This would naturally include formally submitted theses or dissertations, since they normally ought to be available through academic library channels. What is impossible to include are all the pamphlets, announcements, programmes, reviews, interviews, posters, working scripts, and other documentation generated by any performance event or artefacts (film, TV series, etc). On occasion collections of plays or film and video scripts may be included here because they contain substantial historical and critical material.

A list of available anthologies and collections of texts and plays is also provided separately in each of the sections on plays, films, and radio and TV dramas (and series) as listed by title in the appropriate sections in The ESAT Entries. The sections are:

  1. South_African_Films
  2. South African Stage Plays
  3. South African Radio Plays and Serials
  4. South African Television Plays and Series

Books and Articles

Books and Articles on South African and Performance

The list provided here includes all the books, articles and materials consulted to write the Theatre and Performance section of this Encyclopaedia, but is not limited to that body of work.

The aim is to provide as comprehensive a bibliography of South African theatre and performance as is possible. However, please note only (formally or informally) published documents and manuscripts are normally listed. This would naturally include formally submitted theses or dissertations, since they normally ought to be available through academic library channels. What is impossible to include are all the programmes, reviews, interviews, posters, working scripts, and other documentation generated by any performance event. On occasion collections of plays are included here because they contain substantial historical and critical material.

A list of available anthologies and collections is also provided separately in the section Plays 3: Play Anthologies and Collections under South African Stage Plays.

Individual plays, films, and radio and TV dramas (and series) are listed by title in the appropriate sections in The ESAT Entries, i.e.:

  1. South_African_Films
  2. South African Stage Plays
  3. South African Radio Plays and Serials
  4. South African Television Plays and Series
