The original text
Originally written for, and performed on the stage by, the author as a sketch in his London stage revue called En Ville Ce Soir in 1934.
Translations and adaptations
Adapted for the TV screen, the piece became a classic black and white made-for-TV sketch featuring British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden. Shown regularly on New Year's Eve in many countries, it is said by the Guinness Book of Records to be the most frequently repeated TV program ever.
In 2023, the text was translated Afrikaans as Sopper vir Een by Frans Swart and adapted for the stage by him as a spoof on the original play, with the male and female performers switching roles.
