Called "The Cellar" in English, was a small theatre in a converted wine cellar on the farm Libertas/Vredelust in Dorp Street, Stellenbosch (1960-1967).

Founding and early history

The wine cellar was converted into a 100-150 seat theatre by the amateur Libertas Theatre Club in 1960. Two concrete wine tanks, like small rooms, were provided with doors and converted into dressing rooms - their walls were covered with fine red crystals left from the wine-making days. This little theatre was the home of the club until 1967, when they moved to a converted stable on Bergzicht farm in Bird Street, made available by Stellenbosch Municipality.
