("The year my mother started singing") A one act stage adaptation of the 1988 novella by Engemi Ferreira(1943-).

Original text

The novel, published in 1988 by Van der Walt Uitgewers (later known as LAPA publishers), was adapted for the stage as a one or two hander independently by two authors in the 1990s.

Adapted as Die Jaar Toe My Ma Begin Sing Het by Wim Vorster in 1995.

Adapted as Moervrug by Elma Potgieter in 1998.

The plays are both unpublished, but a copy of the Potgieter version is held by DALRO and credited to Engemi Ferreira and Elma Potgieter.

South African performances

1995: Performed at the first Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) in 1995 in Wim Vorster's version (as Die Jaar Toe My Ma Begin Sing Het) as a one man piece, directed by Gert van Niekerk with Hannes van Wyk.

1998: Performed by Die Bywoners as Moervrug at the Aardklop festival on 24 and 25 September, starring Elma Potgieter, and directed by Schalk Jacobsz.

1999: Performed by Die Bywoners as Moervrug at the Witbank Stadsteater festival of solo-plays on 15 Oktober , starring Elma Potgieter, and directed by Schalk Jacobsz.
