Die Friedensfeyer, oder Die unvermuthete Wiederkunft ("The peace Festival, or The unsuspected return") is a German comedy in two acts for children, by Christian Felix Weisse (1726–1804), with music by Johann André (1741–1799).

The original text

Published in 1779 by Schramm and, in the fifth volume of Der Kinderfreund ("The Children's Friend").

Translations and adaptations

F.C.L. Bosman (1928. p. 79) suggests that it was translated into Dutch as Het Vredensfeest by Fokke Simonz (Arend Simonszoon Fokke) in 1802. However, when one looks at the text of the Dutch version, which deals with the Treaty of Amiens between France and England in 1802, it seems unlikely that this could have been the Weisse play of 1779.

Performance history in South Africa

1803: A play announced as Das Friedens-feyer was performed in German in the African Theatre, Cape Town on 12 March 1803 by Het Hoogduitsche Gezelschap van het Liefhebbery Theater with Die Ueberrasschung (Stephanie). Though uncertain, this may have been the text used.
