("The English Goods") A comedy in two acts by August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue. Also known as Die verboten Waren Die Verboten Waren ("The forbidden goods").

The original text

Published in 1809, and first performed in the Burghtheater, Vienna on 4 August, 1810.

Translations and adaptations

Translated from the German original into Dutch as De Engelsche Goederen by Jan Steven van Esveldt Holtrop and published in 1809.

Performance history in South Africa

1833: Performed in Dutch by the amateur company Tot Nut en Vermaak on 24 August as afterpiece to De Kwaade Luim (Von Kotzebue).


1844: Performed in Dutch by the combined company, Het Privaat Hollandsch Tooneellievend Gezelschap playing under the combined motto Tot Nut en Vermaak en Door Yver Vruchtbaar, in the Hope Street Theatre, Cape Town on 15 November, as afterpiece to De Trouwring (Lembert).
