Die Ehe des Herrn Mississippi ("The Marriage of Mr. Mississippi") is a play by the Swiss author and dramatist Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) [1].

The original text

The play was written in 1950, but Dürrenmatt continued to revise it until 1980. It premiered on 26 March 1952 at the Munich Kammerspiele, directed by Hans Schweikart.

Translations and adaptations

The play was adapted into a 1961 German film with the same title [2].

Translated by Pieter Fourie into Afrikaans under the titles Die Huwelik van Mnr. Mississippi and Olympia en Haar Vryers ("Olympia and her Lovers").

Performance history in South Africa

1972: The Fourie Afrikaans translation Olympia en Haar Vryers was staged by PACOFS, directed by Pieter Fourie, with Louw Verwey (Florestan Mississippi), Henk Hugo (Frederic), Johan Botha (Graaf Bodo), Louise Mollett-Prinsloo (Olympia), Jan Prinsloo (Diego), George Barnes (Prof Uberhuber), Trudie Taljaard (Diensmeisie) and Leon Cloete (Extra). Decor by Raimond Schoop and costumes by Penny Simpson.
