A French play based on a film scenario which Bernanos had made of a story by Gertrude von Le Fort, portraying the sufferings and ultimate death on the guillotine of 16 Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution.

== Performance history in South Africa ==
 
 
 
1955: Produced as  at the [[Little Theatre]], Cape Town, directed by [[Fred Engelen]]. In 1955 he visited the School of Speech and Drama at UCT to produce Georges Bernanos's Dialogues of the Carmelites with the students (in Donald Inskip's translation titled The Chosen of God).
