Biography

Deon studied at the University of Natal.



Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

As actor

His first major role was as Romeo in the Theatre Workshop production of Romeo and Juliet. He starred as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, Solange in The Maids, and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Other roles include those in Fifth of July, The Dining Room, Vieux Carré, Terre'Blanche, Macbeth (CAPAB 1981), As jy blind is, hoe weet jy waar om jou sigaret te ash? (2003).

As producer

He founded the Hermit Theatre in Durban in June 1978.

Television

At the start of the 1980s he moved into television.

As actor he was seen in 'n Lug Vol Helder Wolke (as "Kobus", 1982), Westgate II (as "Ronnie Granger", 1982), Brood Vir My Broer (as "Stanley Fouche" (1982), Die Vlakte Duskant Hebron (as "Dawie", 1982), Wolhaarstories (1983), Geel Trui vir 'n Wenner (as "Victor van Rhyn", 1983), , Agter Elke Man (as "Steve Anderson", 1985 and 1988), Rosie (as "John Sauer", 1988),

He worked as assistant director on Skooldae 3 (1984) and as production manager on Mattewis en Meraai(1983), Tawwe Tienies (1984) and Kampus (1985)

As executive producer he worked on Kampus: 'n Varsity-Storie (1986), Web of Persuasion (1986), Louis Motors (1989), Ladies in Waiting (1989), Veldslag (1990), Adam (1990), Egoli: Place of Gold (1991, 4,421 episodes), Die Prince van Pretoria (1992),


In 2016 his documentary My Life on the Tracks - the Rohan Vos Story (about Rohan Vos and Rovos Rail, the luxury train he created) was selected best documentary at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards (HIIDA) in Los Angeles.

Awards, etc

He received the Durban Critics' Circle Award for his contribution to the arts in 1979.
