Death and the Maiden (1990) by Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman. The play is about a woman who takes revenge on her rapist. The time is the present and the place, a country that is probably Chile but could be any country that has given itself a democratic government just after a long period of dictatorship. The world premiere was staged at the Royal Court Theatre in London on 9 July 1991, directed by Lindsay Posner with Juliet Stevenson. Glen Close, Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfuss appeared in a Broadway production.

Dorfman invited Barney Simon to produce the play in South Africa. It was staged at the Market Theatre starring Terry Norton, Ramolao Makhene and Robert Whitehead in 1992.
