De Weddenschap ("The Bet") is a one-act farce in Cape Dutch (Dutch-Afrikaans) by Melt J. Brink (1842–1925).

Also known as Die Weddenskap after 1915.

The original text

Apparently based on a poem by a P.J Kikkert, it was written for Aurora II and first performed in 1871. The original text was published in Kaaps-Hollands ("Cape-Dutch") in 1905 by HAUM, Cape Town, and then re-issed in Afrikaans as Die Weddenskap in 1915.

Translations and adaptations

The play was used as one of the texts in the compilation Ons Hou Konsert II by Robert Mohr (1983).

Performances

1871: First performed in Cape-Dutch by Aurora II on 4 May, with Misdaad en Wroeging (Meys)

1873: Performed in in Cape-Dutch by Aurora II on 4 September, with Haat en Liefde (Bonin/Moolenijzer)

1905?: Possibly performed by Aurora in Cape Town.

1983: Performed as part of Ons Hou Konsert II (Melt Brink/Robert Mohr) by CAPAB in Cape Town.
