De Sint Nicolaas Avond, of Het Bezoek door den Schoorsteen is a comedy by H. van Kup (full names: H. van Overvest Kup: floreat 19th century)[1].


The original text

First performed in the Rotterdamschen Schouwburg on 9 December, 1809 and published in Amsterdam by H. van Kesteren, 1809.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1829: First performed in Cape Town by Tot Nut en Vermaak on 22 August 1829, along with Julius van Sassen (Zschokke). According to Bosman (1928: p. 242), the Kup play was erroneously ascribed to Piek.

1832: Performed in Cape Town as Sint Nicolaas Avond by Tot Nut en Vermaak on 4 August 1832, along with De Onechte Zoon (Von Kotzebue).

1844: Performed in Cape Town by Tot Nut en Vermaak en Door Yver Vruchtbaar on 16 October 1844, along with Carolina en Walmond, of De Geboete Misstap (Fallee).

1845: Performed in Dutch by Het Hollandsch Toneellievend Gezelschap using the combined mottoes Tot Nut en Vermaak en Door Yver Vruchtbaar in De Hollandse Skouburg ("the Dutch theatre") on 17 September, with Montoni, of Het Kasteel van Udolpho (Duval).
