Cradle in the Dust by Joyce Miller. It won first prize in the FATSSA one-act playwriting competition in 1947. It deals with the daughter of a rural family, who seeking employment in the city, leaves her home because the land has been eroded by a prolonged drought. The play explores the credulous faith of those who maintain that the good life is still to be found in the land, as well as traditional beliefs and the need to turn away from them when neccessary. Published in Six One-Act Plays by South African Authors (Pretoria: J.L. van Schaik,1949).
