Colour Sergeant Heaven was a member of the British forces in Cape Town and a performer in, and organizer of, minstrels shows.

Referred to as "Colour Sergeant" Heaven by F.C.L. Bosman (1980: p. 167), he was apparently the organizer of the African Minstrels troupe of performers, which - judging by the title - may have been drawn from a division of African military personnel.

Though it is tempting to assume otherwise in this case, the rank of "Colour Sergeant" does not mean that Heaven was from an African corps of some kind, it is in fact a specific rank of non-commissioned officer found in several armies[1].
