The original text
It is a comedy of sex, dishonesty, and betrayal.
Closer opened at the National Theatre in 1997, directed by the author, winning the Evening Standard award for Best Comedy, as well as the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards and Laurence Olivier awards for Best New Play.
Translations and adaptations
The play has proved to be an international success, having been translated into thirty languages. A screen adaptation, written by Marber, was released in 2004, directed by Mike Nichols and starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen.

1998: Presented by The Market Theatre by arrangement with the Royal National Theatre, 26 June - 8 August 1998 in The Laager, directed by Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, starring Warrick Grier, Amanda Lane, Lionel Newton and Camilla Waldman.
2013: Presented at the Intimate Theatre in Cape Town under the direction of Kim Kerfoot starring Lesoko Seabe (Anna), Electra Nathania (Alice), Wessel Pretorius (Dan) and Albert Pretorius (Larry).
