As a concept, used to refer to the purpose built municipal theatre of a town or city. (Stadskouburg in Afrikaans.) The term often incorporporated into the name of the particular theatre (Johannesburg Civic Theatre, Bloemfontein Civic Theatre, etc.) For more seen under the name of the city.
